Joey Florence
(He/Him/His)
MSW, RSW
Joey is the Clinical Manager at Counselling & Behaviour. He specializes in supporting neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD, autism, developmental disabilities, and learning exceptionalities, drawing on experience in schools, private practice, community services, and camps.
Joey has a particular focus on anxiety and emotional dysregulation at home and at school, supporting both the people who experience them and the parents, educators, and caregivers around them. He presents simulation-based workshops and professional development to elementary and secondary school educators across the GTA. Rather than lecture-style training, these sessions place educators in realistic scenarios where they practise recognizing anxiety and intense emotions as they happen and responding in ways that help students feel safe and regulated. Joey also presents directly to students on online safety and healthy social media use.
Joey brings extensive experience in the disability and developmental sector, having designed and led vocational, employment, and community-based programs that help individuals find meaningful work, build social connections, explore new hobbies, and strengthen life skills.
He is trained in Mindfulness Therapy, using present-moment awareness, mindful breathing, and meditation to help clients observe and accept thoughts and emotions without judgment. His approach is warm, collaborative, and authentic. Joey prioritizes trust and engagement, believing that meaningful change happens when clients feel safe, heard, and supported. As an ally and advocate, he often weaves opportunities for connection and belonging into his work.
Beyond direct practice, Joey has contributed to the wider conversation on disability and inclusion through articles published in ABILITIES magazine and his work with the Canadian Abilities Foundation. His practice is strengths-based, person-centred, and guided by the belief that every individual has the capacity for growth, resilience, and meaningful participation in their community.
I wrote “healthy social media use” instead of just “social media” so the sentence makes clear what students get out of it. If the talks are more about risks, like privacy and online exploitation, change it to “online safety and social media awareness.”
The student talks could also become something schools book. If C&B doesn’t have a page for them yet, it may be worth adding them to the workshops list next to the educator sessions.
